Republican Sen. Jeff Flake would still like to stop Donald Trump from becoming the nominee at the GOP convention next month, but he doubts the effort would work.
Earlier this month, the Arizona Senator suggested a convention challenge to Trump’s nomination, an idea he stood by on Capitol Hill Tuesday.
Still, he was skeptical that it would work.
“It’s probably too late,” he told TIME, adding that Trump’s campaign might put Republican control of the U.S. Senate at risk.
Flake said GOP Senators will be discussing how Trump’s lackluster fundraising will affect their races. “I’m highly skeptical he’s going to put substantial amounts of his own money in,” Flake said. He said Trump’s campaign “weakens the whole party” and will hurt Republican candidates.
“This whole campaign, the Trump campaign, is not good downballot,” Flake said. “None of this is good. I’m not a Trump fan.”
Fellow Arizona Sen. John McCain faces a tough reelection campaign this fall, but Flake said he believes McCain will win in the end.
